1001 Ways To Feed The Soul
73Balancing Spirituality and Religion
Growing up in a highly spiritual family, with a psychic mother and two very intuitive sisters, allowed me to become a very open-minded adult. Mother always taught us that our souls were immortal and God's existence was spread out in all of creation. Her wisdom was uncommon for someone born in poverty, in a rural area, with little formal education. It was certainly something she had learned on her own. However, her acquired knowledge of the spirit world was not enough to make her turn her back on organized religion. We were asked to attend church every Sunday, although I don't recall her ever accompanying us. And I asked myself why anyone would attend a church service knowing that God could be found anywhere. But we knew better than that. We did as we were told and we never questioned her authority. It wasn't until years later that I came to the conclusion that she was afraid to let go of her tradition.
Her vision expanded further still as she came accross books that explained subjects as reincarnation, karma, reiki, dream interpretation, and the use of crystals and minerals. The three of us followed her footsteps mesmerized at the results of knocking on that little door called subconsciousness . It has been like opening a pandora box. The truth continues unfolding before our eyes. But even after becoming a New Age junkie, mother never had the courage or the interest to separate herself from the unnecessary rituals of religion. But to her credit, she did make a lot of modifications! She died of cancer five years ago. As she rested on her deathbed in a comma, holding on to the last thread of her carnal existence, the three of us gathered around her and caressing her hands reaffirmed her that we were ready to let her go, that we understood that it was only her body dying and we knew that all of us would meet again soon, in the afterdeath, or in another life. As we said this, her soul began to take off from the damaged, unrecognizable body that had sheltered her for sixty-seven years.
Having the awareness that our souls continue to exist after our physical death does not lessen the pain of losing a loved one. Her spirit has visited us in dreams to let us know that she is still watching over us, and although impossible to know for sure, it seems that she has given us clues of her recent reincarnation within the family. Once the newborn is old enough to give me and my sisters that scolding motherly look that we all feared, we'll know for sure!

The Evolution of the Soul
There seems to be a hierarchy within the spiritual realm. Just like a big business coorporation, there are people who oversee other's jobs and make decisions whenever it's necessary, put certain restrictions in place, and allow opportunities as well. This does not mean that we are unable to make our own decisions. Your supervisors can create circumstances at work, but they cannot force you to make specific choices. That is why we are granted our free will .
Before understanding the difference between Angels and Spirit Guides, it's important to know how the soul evolves. The evolution of a soul depends on the intensity of the lessons learned in previous lives, or simply the amount of lives it has lived. We choose our family and life conditions at the time of reincarnation and we are aware of what challenges are going to be thrown our way at the time we are born. To use an example: You go to your local college to register for a class because you want to learn how to speak Greek as a second language. You look at the registration form and notice several choices. Choice number one is a Greek for Beginners or Greek 101 course. This class meets five times a week and goes on for almost five months. This course will have to be followed by another three levels that are similar in length. The good thing about it is that you will be able to learn at a moderate pace allowing more time to assimilate and practice the language. Choice number two is an Intensive Greek Language course. This class meets once a week for four hours and only lasts three months. By the time you finish this class, you should be able to speak Greek as good as those students who have spent two years taking the other courses. Of course, you won't have much room for entertainment during those three months should you decide to reach your goal.
Now you understand why the world seems so unbalanced at times and the reason why we see so much misery in the world. We tend to question God's fairness when we encounter poverty, disease, hunger, drug and alcohol abuse, physical and psychological abuse, etc. The soul of that homeless drug addict, as difficult as it seems to accept, not only understood what it was headed for at the time of reincarnation, but it also agreed to live in such conditions in an effort to speed up the evolutionary process. And that's where destiny and free-will go hand in hand. Some people are not born into high risk families but make choices that put them in what we consider a bad predicament. Either way, they are getting an intensive course on spiritual growth, although it might not seem that way. Some of us assimilate the lessons we are meant to learn as we grow older. Others, especially those who are in the Intensive Greek Language Course , become blind by their own struggle and don't come to full realization until they separate from their physical bodies.
So, what does evolution have to do with Angels and Spirit Guides? That's the only thing that separates one from the other. An Angel (or a Master), is the highest evolved spiritual being. Their realm is so far from anything we are used to that it's almost impossible to perceive. That particular door has not yet opened for me to explore, but I like to believe that acknowledging that it exists is like knocking on the door and waiting for someone to answer. I might get a glimpse of it in this lifetime, or the next. At least, that's what I hope for.
For now, I will share with you whatever knowledge I have on the spiritual chain of command. Our closest entities, our Spirit Guides. Yes, we all have several of them. These are the souls of people who might or might not have any previous link to us. They come from all different paths of life; or at least, that's how they choose to present themselves. I say this because the soul has no physical appearance, but in order for you to relate to them easier, they opt to present themselves as they looked in a previous life.
Spiritual Guides are assigned to inspire and protect us whenever possible at the time we reincarnate. Small children are more in tune with these spirits and many refer to them as imaginary friends. As we grow and are asked to accept our physical world as the only reality there is, we tend to lose touch with them. Sometimes it takes a major incident or threat to our lives to attest to their presence. I have a personal theory that I'd like to discuss with others about the relatonship we have with our Spirit Guides, but that will come later on. It is not my intention to confuse readers, but to offer them whatever knowledge I have on the subject.
Communicating with your Spirit Guide is easy. They are good friends and make wonderful listeners. They have no choice, really! The more you get to know them, the more you'll see them as immidiate family. If you have the gift of claivoyance but are afraid of seeing spirits, you can always ask them to come to you in dreams. Remember, they were once flesh and bone. They know what it is like to be afraid of the unknown.
It is not necessary to offer anything to your Spirit Guides. Some people light candles, make an offering of flowers, etc. It's part of our spiritual evolution and I've done it before as well. We are so used to religion that at first you'll feel more comfortable following some type of ritual in order to communicate with the spirit world. If this is where you are at spiritually, there is nothing wrong with doing it. Acknowledging they exist is the first step to strengthening your bond with them. That, plus starting to listen to that little voice inside your head or that gut feeling that we all have. By the way, if the voice inside your head is telling you to kill people, sick professional help. That is by no means a Spirit Guide!

I really enjoy your hubs, please keep up the good work. Although i am not that i religious i do believe there is more to life than we fully appreciate.
Very good !
Klara:
Very respectfully, I don't agree with one word you pen in this "hub" but you do have a way with words and how to express yourself...good writer!
Nicely written "hub" based 100% on naught but "hope."
Qwark :-)
I'm sorry about your Mom. Mine dies like that as well a long time back. After my daddy died when I was eight, I had an aunt that said I had a skinny soul. She needed to save me and feed me the good Lord's bread, I was dunked in a water trough for cattle. I still have a club-footed skinny soul and the dunking didn't take. I am rotten to the core. Welcome to HP btw. Now I'll probably pester you, just tell me off, I can live with it, I'm built for that.
Oh wow.
I had a moment of quiet and some goosebumps on my arms during and after reading.
It's a similar feeling to what I had upon discovering 'The Egg' story on stumbleupon today. (http://www.galactanet.com/oneoff/theegg_mod.html)
Your title caught my eye initially because 1001 is my number. I claim it as such because everytime I am compelled forcefully to look at the clock, it is 10:01. It's a peaceful number to me, a sort of reminder.
And of course, it brought me to this first thing before I read any of your other hubs. Awesome! I loved reading this, even as I felt some sadness (and awe) about your mother.
I picked 'somewhat important' in the poll because while I am not religious nor do I ever feel compelled to be, I am ritualistic. I like the comfort of simple rituals in everything that I do.
Great hub, Klara.
I do agree with this Hub, The God within, the sprit guidance and practices that strengthen and teach you to feel it. The recognition that religion is not it, and God can be reached without a church.
well I know sometimes I post way right, but not always, and I am really more to the middle, something is Holding all this togeather, don't know what, but the more I study now (Anchient Anthro), go on the digs and hunt for fact, I am finding a lot of truth, and it def. is not Religion. The Chruch brainwashing is taking a bit to leave me!!!!!...lol
and I do like the wave length :)
Very nice article! At times I think of the difference between being religous and spiritual. I consider myself to be spiritual, I believe God is every where, even within us. You don't need to go to church to prove that your worthy of God's love. If people prefer to go to church that's fine by me, I respect that, everybody is different. I was raised Catholic and I come from a Hispanic background on my dad's side. My dad emphasized the importance of going to church when I was little but as I got older I felt I didn't need to go to church to prove I'm thankful for God's gifts. Although, I will go to church on holidays because they are special days. :)
Thanks klarawiek and you're welcome! I am a registered nurse and that's nice your sister is one too. You write such insightful articles. Thank you for your fan mail. Hopefully I will be inspired and post something soon. Have a goodnight! :)
Klara-interesting that I am reading this tonight-I just posted a hub about Spiritual retreats. My spiritual evolvement has been an intersting one through the years. Thanks for sharing your insights.

It is through our religious upbringing that we initially recognize our Spirituality, I think. Full meaning of its ramifications in our life comes with living our lives. Thank you for the informative article
